Children’s Day is celebrated across India to increase awareness of the rights, care and education of children on 14 November every year as a tribute to India’s First Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Jawaharlal Nehru was born this day in 1889. He was known for his love and affection for children and advocated for children to have fulfilled education. He once said ‘The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country’.
On this day, many educational and motivational programs are held across India, by and for children. Parents and teachers give gifts to children and schools and colleges hold several functions including quiz, competitions, and music and dance performances on this day. At Elsa Primary School, the day was celebrated with students singing, distribution of sweaters whilst older students prepared a delicious curry and rice lunch for everyone.
