Elsa Primary School

Elsa Primary School opened in 2010 in Harijan Colony, Bodhgaya. Then in 2015, it relocated to opposite the Tergar Monastery in order to provide education for children from the villages of Jamuna Biya and Bagha. The villagers work as farm labourers, are very poor and are mostly illiterate. The students of Elsa Primary School are the first generation from these villages to receive any education. Over time, this will change the culture of the village so that education becomes the norm, rather than the exception.

There are several grades at the school with students’ ages ranging from six to twelve. There are two teachers in one classroom where the forty students are seated in rows according to their grade. Winter can be very cold in Bodhgaya, and on some days, it is too cold to conduct classes in the classroom and students are taught outdoors. Daily meals are given to supplement the students’ diets and also to encourage their attendance at school.
